Courtney Bethel - MacDowell Artists Residency Program

 Having Courtney talk about Art Residency at MacDowell was really eye opening. I never really completely understood what Residency Programs really are for artist but it is extremely nice to know what there are so many out there. One aspect that I was interested in was the photography. With photography, you can't always get everything done within a studio or a small space. There can be a lot of traveling depending on the what you are photographing so I started to look up Residency Programs specifically for photographers. 


The Banff Centre Visual and Digital Arts Residencies

Location: Banff, Alberta, Canada
Duration: 2-6 weeks
Entry Fee: $75
Perks: Food included, cutting-edge facilities, support staff, art library, interdisciplinary atmosphere, gorgeous landscape


Badlands National Park Residency

Location: Badlands National Park, South Dakota, USA
Duration: 4-6 weeks
Cost: Must do a minimum of four workshops with youth in the area, host a public presentation and donate one work within the year of residency
Perks: One bedroom apartment, cooking equipment provided. Reimbursement of $300 for travel and art supplies.


Light Grey Art Lab Residency

Location: Iceland (starting in Reykjavik and then travelling in southwestern Iceland)
Duration: 6 days and 5 nights
Entry Fee: None
What You Pay For: $1,500 for meals , transportation, gas, lodging, and some workshop supplies. Airfare is the responsibility of the artists.
Perks: Unique landscape, the opportunity to meet like-minded artists, and a guided experience through Iceland


Burren College of Art Residency

Location: Burren, Ireland
Duration: Minimum of 4 weeks
Entry Fee: None
What You Pay For: 860€ for four weeks
Perks: Black and white darkroom, 3D lab, digital lab, library, and 24 /7 access to studio space

Art of Protest

What a freaking awesome documentary!! You could really see the passion that each artist put into their work. About 10 to 15 minutes into the documentary, there was one thing that popped into my mind, freedom. I was born in Vietnam and didn't come to the United States until 1997 and it has always amazed me how much freedom and how much you can get away within this country. It ties back to the Pussy Riot and how they were exercising their freedom of speech but were taken to prison for 2 years. I remember growing up in Vietnam seeing the red flag with yellow stars but when I came to America I would see a yellow flag with 3 red stripes. I never knew why the Vietnamese people used 2 different flags until my parents told me that a big majority of the Vietnamese population in America was against the Communist party and that America was their escape. McDonald's Prankster

  What Jevh and Christian did was ballsy and amazing. It reminds me of what Vaughn always tells us, "just fucking do it", and they literally did. Adding a creative way to get recognized and for McDonald's to notice what their campaign had been missing the whole time, diversity. I will say using the McDonald's logo could have gotten them in trouble. I love the commitment and the mindset of just putting your artwork out there.
