Julie Webb

Before today I actually have not heard of the Webb Gallery but it was really eye opening. I feel like the Webb Gallery has a different feel to it and the artwork really shows. It's not your typical art galleries that you would see in the city. Listening to how Julie and her Husband started the gallery was really refreshing. They do so much for the art community and the community around them. 

I went on the Webb Gallery website to take a look at the current exhibition and there was 2 that really stood out to me, Carnival Banner and Powell St. John. Looking at the Carnival Banner gives me that nostalgic feeling so the old school traveling Carnival that I had the chance to go with as a kid. It's so rare to see carnival in this time. After reading about Rayward Powell St. John I was instantly interested. He talks about only making artwork from what he sees, especially when he is on Psychedelic drugs. There has been a history of artist making work based off of what they see and feel while on drugs and I do not blame them. When you are on Psychedelics you tend to see the worst around you change and its always different and out of the norm.

  After looking at Vaughn's post, I picked out a handful of artwork from Lee Bontecou to research a little more. Upon reading about Bontecou, the first thing that stood out to me was how she used the darkest part of her work to create a different dimension. Lee refers to her "black hole or voids" as a way to bring you into her world of science fiction. The art work below main focus, for me, is the center circular object. I am torn between a part of a spacecraft and the center of a universe that she has created. In my last post, Sean Tucker talked about embracing the shadows and I feel that Bontecou pieces speaks to me in the same way.

Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon

Steal Like An Artist An artist is someone who demands your time and attention, and got it. In that sense, Austin Kleon’s “Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative” is a work of art in the first half. The second half is forgettable and overall, the book had helped me realized a few important ingredients I am missing in my pot.   The first part of the book is a work of art. It is exhilarating to see someone extol the virtue of stealing. I have always felt my works is derivative, and have always tried to come up with some original ideas, unsuccessfully. Reading the first part of the book reassured me of my short comings and renewed my hope for better things to come.   Then the book gets repetitive and most of the latter advices the author had to offer at the end is very mundane and obvious.
